Galaxy CDs Transforms to Meet Changing Music Scene

If you’re wandering in Hamilton and hear a band jamming, don’t be surprised. For over a decade, Galaxy CDs has been a retail store that also supported the Hamilton music and arts community. Beginning this November, owner Ryan Shoemaker and a group of customers turned friends and supporters will continue the Galaxy tradition of fostering community through art and music by becoming a full-time venue that cultivates and supports the growth of local musicians, artists and writers.

The Galaxy’s identity – from a retail location to a hub for the area’s music and arts community – evolved by necessity. Like many music shops, the growth of online music sales and the economy presented financial challenges. By offering artists and musicians a place to practice, play, learn and teach, and aspiring writers a place for their voices to be heard, the Galaxy can continue to be an important part of the community by offering a safe, positive environment that inspires creativity and collaboration.

In the next few months, the Galaxy, in cooperation with The Lonely House (http://thisisthelonelyhouse.com/) and Migrate Productions (http://migratemusicnews.com/) will partner with local schools, charities and civic organizations to establish an events calendar that encourages Hamilton and its neighboring towns to continue to grow and thrive, in creative and culturally impactful ways. Art shows, songwriting lessons and clinics, writer’s clinics and readings and open-mic evenings are just some of what the Galaxy plans to offer.

As it has for the past 11 years, the Galaxy will continue to introduce new music and bands to the area, while giving smaller, local acts a chance to perform with touring bands and musicians. The Galaxy has already hosted touring artists such as Gates, Trees Above Mandalay, innards, and O’Brother, in addition to dozens of local and regional bands like Sohio, Josh Eagle & The Harvest City, Mixtapes and more.

Now, the Galaxy is poised to become something bigger and better, and is looking forward to another decade of music, art, and community.
